If you have a look at my Instagram you may get the idea that I love a sweet treat, and well, love is an understatement, I’d say I have a bit of a sugar addiction. Every time I come across a great little bakery, cake or sweet shop, I have to stop in and buy something. I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite places to satisfy my sugar cravings.
Burch and Purchese Sweet Studio
647 Chapel Street
South Yarra Vic 3141
This is hands down my favourite sweet stop in Melbourne. Everything from those delicious cake cylinders to those amazing PBJ Wheels. The mix of flavours in every single creation is just perfect, in some cases flavours I would never think go together, when put in the hands of Burch and Purchese it just works. I have nothing but praise for everything they do. If you haven’t tried it yet, make you’re way down to Chapel Street and give it a crack. You won’t regret it.
237 Smith Street
Fitzroy Vic 3066
When I was pregnant nothing made me happier than gelato, so naturally, Gelato Messina was my favourite place in the world. I’ve had gelato and ice cream all over Melbourne, there are a few really good places that I would recommend, but Messina is a head above the rest. I really can’t count the number of times I’ve been down there, but as soon as the sun comes out it’s one of the first places I visit.
If you’re luck enough to get down there when it’s not too busy, the amazing staff are more than happy to let you sample just about every flavour (of course I’ve done this), and let me tell you each gelato has such a rich and full flavour, if it’s called Apple Pie, that’s exactly what it tastes like.
My top picks are salted caramel and white chocolate, coffee, Biggie Smores, The Slab, Hodor and milk chocolate with peanut fudge. Also, their gelato cakes are great too, worth every cent.
81a Hudsons Road
Spotswood Vic 3015
When I’m having a bad day with bubs and I need to get out of the house, my favourite place to go is Candied Bakery. They offer both sweet and savoury treats to satisfy any craving. I tend to do the responsible thing and get a BLT or a piece of quiche with an apple pie milk shake (it has apple in it, so it has to be healthy, right), then I go back to the counter for a sugar hit (because the shake was never going to be enough). Those donuts, really the donuts are delicious. The donut flavours change regularly, so I’ve tried the vanilla custard and classic jam donuts and they were both great. My favourite part? When I get there at 2pm I can still get one! So many place only make a limited number of donuts, so unless you’re there first thing in the morning, you miss out (I’m sure just about every foodie in Melbourne knows the places I’m talking about).
Also, special mention goes to their cookies, that PJB cookie is AHH MAY ZING! Actually, I think I may just head down there tomorrow and get my fix.
Don’t Tell Charles
70 Speakmen Street
Kensngton Vic 3031
Don’t tell Charles is hidden away under the Vue Apartment building, but let me say, that didn’t stop the people from coming in the door. The first time I went, I arrived at about 11am on a Saturday and there wasn’t a person in sight, so immediately I questioned how good it would be. I was with a friend, so we both ordered cake and took a seat. Literally within 5 minutes of us sitting down, the place was packed. Luck for us, we beat the crowd.
When ordering, I stood in front of the cake cabinet for ages, I wanted to eat everything, but eventually settled on the raspberry and chocolate brownie cheesecake. It was just as good as it sounds, so naturally I inhaled it. As we left, I went to get another one for the road and was gutted to find out that they had sold out.
I’m a huge fan of high tea, so I’m planning to go back and enjoy high tea with Charles.
Cacao Fine Chocolate
Melbourne Vic 3000
I’ll admit it, I never actually been in store, but I went to the Cake, Bake and Sweets Show a fortnight ago and Cacao was my highlight so I had to add it to my list. They had all of the current buzz items – eclairs, donuts and wagon wheels. The queue of people around their stand was crazy, so I couldn’t quite see the eclairs, but I managed to get a couple of donuts and a wagon wheel. I took a bite into that donut and HELLO! It was awesome. There are lots of places doing donuts these days, but I don’t think they all do a good job of them, Cacao on the other hand have mastered the art of the donut.
And yes, I will get my butt into gear and actually go to the Cacao Lab, but it could be a very very dangerous trip!
10 English Street
Essendon Fields Vic 3041
LaManna is a huge one stop shop at Essendon Airport. I live locally, so It’s easy for me to head down there, do my groceries and buy some cake! I tend to buy cakes here if I’m going to someone’s house or if I’m having people at mine. Their Nutella Cheesecake is out of this world, so are the red velvet and the flourless chocolate cakes. But it doesn’t stop there, their individual desserts are also great, especially those cannoli, oh and the nutella and oreo jars, yep delicious.
Rear of 285 – 287 Coventry Street
South Melbourne Vic 3205
Lucky last is Chez Dre. It should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that I have included them as one of my favourite sweet places, they have the complete package, great lunch/brunch and amazing desserts. But be warned this place is packed ALL OF THE TIME! Week days, week ends, packed, except sometimes at about 2pm on a weekday, so that’s the time that I go. I bring my son everywhere I go, so most cafes see me walking in with a stroller and cringe, but not the staff at Chez Dre, they were so lovely and accommodating.
Their lunch option are great, but I’m here to talk about those cakes and damn they’re good, they’re worth the usual wait for a table any day of the week. I love them all, seriously, stand in front of that cake cabinet and tell me it’s easy to make a decisions.
Special mention goes to Lux Bite and Big Lou’s Donuts.
Go forth and satisfy your sugar cravings.
