Foodie Corner – Operator25, DOC Pizza and Mozzarella Bar

25 Wills Street
West Melbourne Vic 3000

I had to drop the husband off in the city for his work Christmas party last week, so since I was in the area I decided to duck into Operator25 for a quick lunch.

Tucked away in a quiet little street off La Trobe Street you’ll find this great little café, just follow the smell of coffee and you won’t miss it. I rolled up with bubs in the stroller and needed some help up the stairs, but once inside the staff were so lovely and seated us in a corner so that we weren’t bothering anyone.

Foodie Corner – Pop Up Scroll, The Boathouse

Pop Up Scroll
86 Smith Street
Collingwood Vic

Anyone who is anyone in Melbourne, well at least the foodie type, is talking about Pop Up Scroll in Collingwood. I’ve always been a fan of the good old cinnamon scroll, but to be honest it has been quite a while since I had one. The current talk is that scrolls are the new donut or macaron or cupcake, you get my drift? It’s just a matter of time before little scroll shops are popping up all over Melbourne.

Foodie Corner – Duchess of Spotswood, Three Bags Full, The Austen Tea Room

It’s been an insanely busy week trying to get organised for Christmas, but fortunately I’ve had the husband around to help out (lucky bugger is on holidays), so we’ve managed to sneak in a couple of outings.

Duchess of Spotswood
87 Hudson Road
Spotswood Vic 3015

Lets be honest there isn’t a huge abundance of amazing cafes in the western suburbs, but the tide is a changing and there is no better example of this than this place. The Duchess is definitely the jewel in the crown when it comes to great cafes out west.

When we walked into the Duchess we were greeted by the loveliest and incredibly accommodating staff, so immediately I was in love. We walked through the café to their homely courtyard, where we sat at a wooden table under a huge lemon tree, so naturally when it came time to order drinks,  I picked one of their homemade lemonades.

We ordered the steak sandwich (open steak sandwich, red pepper relish, fried egg and salad) and beef burger (wagyu burger, with tomato, cheddar, bread and butter pickle, iceberg, mayo) and both were great, perfect for a sunny Melbourne afternoon. The sandwich was full of flavour, the combination of the steak, egg and relish was just perfect. The burger was just as good, very tender, juicy and complemented perfectly by those chips – deelish!

So the food was great, the service was quick and friendly, I got parking right out front and like that, we’re onto a winner!

If you’re out west, or just taking the kids to Scienceworks, make a pitstop at the Duchess of Spotswood.

Travelling with a baby

IMG_0068When my husband first floated the idea of taking a trip interstate, I have to admit, I thought he was joking around. I mean really, taking a 7 month old child on a plane and staying away from home for two weeks? Who would do that! Think of all the things we needed to take and what if he had a melt down on the plane? This is supposed to be a holiday, not a nightmare. NO THANKS!

It took a bit of persuasion, but in the end I came around. I was still a bit apprehensive when we booked our flights and accommodation, but I guess you don’t know if you don’t give it a try (said the woman that regreted it the second I pressed ok on the credit card transaction). Continue reading

Foodie Corner – Barry, Red Spice Road

Sorry for the delayed post this week. We arrived home from Port Douglas midweek and it’s taken me a few days to get everything sorted at home,. but I’m in Melbourne and right back into the local cuisine.

85 High Street
Northcote Vic 3070

It has been a really long time since I last ventured into Northcote and let me say, High Street got hip! I may be well behind the 8 ball on this one, but it’s better that I discovered it now than never.

We visited Barry for a Friday lunch and the place was buzzing. I felt a little bad making my way into a packed café with a stroller, but the staff were so lovely, and seated us in a spot where we wouldn’t be bothering anyone.

Upon first glance of the menu, I was very impressed, there were so many dishes on the menu I wanted to order, but in the end we settled in the Ricotta Hotcake (Ricotta hotcake, blackberries,  Canadian maple, roasted hazelnuts,  cacao mulberries) and the Superfood Salad (Californian superfood salad –  tri-coloured quinoa, shredded kale, wild organic rice, coriander, charred     corn, salted ricotta, black turtle beans, heirloom tomatoes, jalapeño, gojis, spicy lime vinaigrette).

Let me tell you, that ricotta hotcake was awesome! Soft, fluffy and downright delicious. It gives that Ricotta Hotcake from Top Paddock a real run for its money, definitely one of the best I’ve had in Melbourne. We gave some to bubs and I think he shared my opinion, the kid couldn’t get enough of it.

The superfood salad was just as impressive, a truly delicious example of a quinoa salad. I enjoyed every single spoonful, and although I was insanely full at the end of it, I still could have had more. So many elements, but each complimented each other perfectly and really made this a great dish.

I was really impressed with Barry, it competes with the top cafe’s in Melbourne. So make the trip to Northcote, you won’t regret it.

Swimsuit Heaven

Summer is upon us ladies (rejoice Melbourne, the sun is out!), so there is no time like the present to look at some of the great swimwear on offer this year. I’ve been sunning myself in Port Douglas for the last couple of weeks and while here I’ve been on the hunt for some new swimmer, these are the best of what I’ve come across.
