The Stables of Como

Set in what I feel is one of the most beautiful inner city locations, the Stables of Como provides you with that really warm and welcoming feeling you usually get from being out in the country. It’s beautifully rustic and provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
We visited for lunch on a beautiful Melbourne day and sat at a table inside the restaurant. The staff were lovely and acted very promptly on all of our requests, however it has to be said, this isn’t the place to go to if you’re after a quick lunch as it took some time for our orders to be prepared (not that we were worried, it’s not like we had anywhere to be afterwards and I was pretty content to just spend some time soaking up the atmosphere).
We ordered the smashed avocado (Smashed avocado with marinated feta, chilli, avocado oil, baby basil + chard lemon on multigrain toast, plus a poached egg), the smoked salmon bruschetta (Smoked salmon bruschetta, dill cream fraiche, pickled fennel, avocado, crispy capers + frisee leaves) and the pork belly (Twice cooked pork belly, fennel puree, pork croquette + apple salad).
Our experience was a bit mixed to say the least. I had the smashed avocado and really enjoyed it, but you really can’t go wrong with avocado on toast, it’s always a winner. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts I’m a bit of a light weight when in comes to chilli, but I thought I’d take a chance and order it regardless, I figure it’s time to harden up. Anyway it did have a bit of a kick, but nothing too overpowering and to be honest I actually really enjoyed the chilli in this dish.
The other two ladies with me didn’t quite enjoy their dishes as much as I did, to be brutally honest they were both really disappointed. The pork belly was a very small dish, so don’t order this if you’re hungry. Plus disappointingly, the pork was quite tough and not overly tasty.
Unfortunately the salmon wasn’t much better. We envisioned slices of smoked salmon, however once it arrived it was actually one large piece of salmon on top of the bruschetta and to our disappointment it was quite dry and overcooked.
I was really gutted that we didn’t have a better experience at The Stables, I just love being in this beautiful location, but if and when we return I think we’ll all be eating the smashed avocado.

Tucked away in a little street just off Toorak Road, in and amongst a stack of construction work, you would miss the little store if it weren’t for the fluro pink Zumbo sign inside.
As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the amazing cake cabinet and immediately I went into melt down, how does an indecisive sugar/dessert addict like me pick just one cake? I pondered picking one to eat there and then picking a couple of others for the road, but that little voice in my head was telling me that by waistline would hate me for it, so I made the controlled decision to just get one.
Fortunately I was with my mum and sister, so we picked three different cakes to each try. After much deliberation, we settled on the Aerocake (coffee crunch, coffee crème, vanilla sponge, vanilla vinegar and raspberry jelly, vanilla and white chocolate mousse with a coffee glaze), Pollock Nights (coconut dacquoise, coconut crunch, passionfruit sponge soaked in passionfruit syrup, pineapple compote, coconut mousse and striking black glaze) and the Dr Dot cake (Chocolate sable, white nougat, roasted cocoa nib crème brulee, raspberry vinegar jelly, gianduja mousse and dark chocolate glaze).
Each cake was incredibly creamy and full of flavour. With each new spoonful I could taste another different element of the cake, quite literally it just got better and better the further we got into each one. My favourites were the Aerocake and the Dr Dot, but I’m a sucker for anything chocolate, so I was always going to enjoy theses the most. Realistically, you can order any of Zumbos individual cakes and you won’t be disappointed, he definitely knows how to satisfy your sweet tooth.
