You can pick up a pizza on just about every street corner in Melbourne, but unfortunately the vast majority of pizza shops offer a rather mediocre product. You know the type I’m talking about, think base, topped with tomato paste, half a kilo of cheap shredded ham, tinned pineapple and drowning in cheese. Every now and then this type of pizza is ok, but it shouldn’t be accepted as the norm.
There are a number of characteristics that set apart the average and the amazing pizzas, namely a crispy thin base topped with fresh high quality ingredients like buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil and great quality meat cuts. This more traditional type of pizza has grown in popularity making it much easier to find, however very few have mastered the art of pizza making to the extent that they have at Ladro. Mr Scruff’s plays in the very competitive Collingwood/Fitzroy burger space and based on what I’ve been told it holds its own against the big boys. Offering what can best be described as an American style menu with a twist (edamame are listed on the menu right next to the beef burger), they have a stack of really appealing meal options that are naturally rich and packed with flavour.
The menu doesn’t look all that big, but looks are definitely deceiving. Just about everything on it looks delicious and if I were eating with my eyes i’d pack on 10kgs in an instant. I’m talking salt and vinegar onion rings, mac & cheese croquettes, fried chicken, smoked beef short ribs, nachos, burgers and the list goes on. Needless to say it took us ages to decide what to eat, but with so many great options, we knew we were in for a good feed. Continue reading →
In a turn of events I’ve found myself on bed rest in hospital, AGAIN! And as much as I love hospital food (sarcasm much?), I look forward to the days my husband picks up dinner on his way in to see me. I must say, if you get stuck in hospital you really want it to be inner city. I’m fortunate enough to be based in East Melbourne, which means some of the best eateries in town are just a hop, skip and a jump away (well not for me, but for anyone I can convince to do a food run).
Earlier this week I got to tick Trippy Taco off my huge list of places to visit. I’ve wanted to check it out for ages, but for one reason or another it hasn’t happened, and after taking the first bite out of my burrito, I immediately regretted the wait. Why oh why had I not tried this goodness sooner? Continue reading →
I love winter, well not so much the cold miserable weather, but I love the idea of cuddling up near the heater or fire, staying warm in a cosy bed, enjoying every manner of comfort food and most of all wearing super comfy winter clothes.
As soon as Autumn hits I start prepping my winter wardrobe, and let me tell you, there are some awesome pieces up for grabs this year. Here are some of my top picks (and a few items that I may have purchased in the last week).
I’m baaaaack! Well kinda, I’m trying to ease back into things after taking a bit of a hiatus, thanks to some not so enjoyable morning sickness (baby number two is well and truely cooking, and giving me some grief in the mean time). After 4.5 months of not being able to stomach much, we finally decided to venture out and enjoy some food with taste – oh how I’ve missed you! So off we went to Shane Delia’s latest kebab venture, Biggie Smalls. Continue reading →
