Food – A Thousand Blessings

251 Highett Street
Richmond Vic 3121

After not lunching in Richmond for ages, I found myself back there for the third consecutive week and thought it was the perfect opportunity to tick A Thousand Blessings off my list. This popular cafe has been on my ‘to do’ list for longer than I can remember and as soon as we were seated at one of their communal tables I immediately understood why it has experienced such ongoing success. Housed on a leafy back street, the cafe itself is bright and fresh with a somewhat minimalist and rustic fit out. There is no artwork in sight, with the decoration and texture in the space coming by way of large timber feature walls. Continue reading

Food – Ten One Ate

1018 Mount Alexander Road
Essendon Vic 3040

Most people in the north western suburbs of Melbourne would know of the Brickmakers Arms, a historic pub in Essendon that was demolished to make way for apartments. Once demolished the empty façade stood  behind temporary fencing for years on end awaiting the commencement of construction. Eventually the apartments were built and a new restaurant aptly named the Brickmakers Arms opened on the ground floor. Despite some initial success, the restaurant closed its doors late last year after newly imposed council parking restrictions brought the business to its knees. Fast forward to February 2016 and the smart thinking owners put it all on the line to relaunch the space as a modern café named Ten One Ate. Continue reading

Food – Barry

85 High Street
Northcote Vic 3070

So I’ve been to Barry a couple of times (read about it here) and without rehashing what I’ve previously written, take my word when I say it’s pretty awesome. I’ve never had a bad experience and I really can’t fault their food or coffee offering.  They have one of the best superfood salads in town, their tomatos and peanut butter on toast is the bomb and their ricotta hotcake is better than any others. Continue reading

Food – The Vertue of The Coffee Drink

8 Raffa Place
Carlton Vic 3053

You can find restaurants housed just about anywhere in Melbourne. If there is a vacant property, often the more obscure the better, the space is guaranteed to be utilised as a funky eatery. The Vertue of the Coffee drink is no exception. This micro roaster and café is housed in an L shaped warehouse, situated at the end of a non descript laneway in Carlton. Had it not been for a ‘coffee here’ sign I would have aimlessly wondered around the streets of Carlton trying to find it.

Upon entering the unassuming site, you’ll be nicely surprised by the smart fit out which utilises the light from the high ceilings to open up the space and creates a real freshness through the use of plants and timber fittings. Being a micro roaster, a coffee roaster is used as part of the décor and is somewhat of a focal point in the small space. Continue reading

Food – East Elevation

351 Lygon Street
Brunswick 3056 VIC

Housed in an old warehouse on the Brunswick end of Lygon Street, what you find when entering the red door of East Elevation is in complete contrast to the concrete jungle outside. This large warehouse space has a really earthy feel to it and almost resembles a greenhouse just with an industrial twist. There are literally plants everywhere you look, be it in planter boxes, little pots, vases or hanging from the ceiling, which create a very calming environment to enjoy a meal. Continue reading
