Food – Horse on Heels

50 Rose Street
Fitzroy Vic 3065

Waffles, waffles and more waffles, that’s what you get at Fitzroy new comer Horse on Heels. Be it sweet or savoury, crisp or soft, the team here have masterfully created a menu that embraces the humble waffle in all its possible forms and paired it with a mix of delicious toppings.

Located of quiet Rose Street next door to the Rose Street Artists Market, there is no signage on the building and had it not been for a tiny chalk board out the front, I would have walked right by. Once inside, I was surprised to find that the roof on the front part of the modern space had been removed to create an outdoor area that from street level looked to be indoors. The surrounding apartments block most of the sun, but the space still feels bright and fresh thanks to the plain concrete walls, white chairs and light timber tables.

A waffle forms the base of every dish, however they vary in flavour from Belgian Liege, to Flax Seed, and Black Charcoal Coconut. The Belgian is used in the sweet dishes and the Flax Seed in the savoury, with the charcoal appearing in the more experimental dishes. Which ever waffle you prefer, each dish is made up of complementary ingredients, some on the classic side like a mushroom omelette and others on the random side like grilled pork belly with charred pineapple.

For me, the highlight of our visit was their signature popcorn chicken waffle (popcorn chicken, caramel popcorn, pickled kale with chimichurri aioli sauce on a black charcoal coconut waffle). This dish was ahhhmayzing! It was perfectly balanced, both in terms of texture and flavour. The waffle was thin, soft and delicious. It was savoury and sweet all at the same time. The chicken was crispy and really tasty especially once paired with the sweet popcorn and flavoursome aioli. There was nothing that I didn’t like about this dish, I ate every last crumb and am already making plans for a return visit.

I genuinely enjoyed our visit to Horse on Heels and rate the food as some of the best I’ve had this year. This is one place that is definitely living up to all the hype.
