When visiting Small Axe Kitchen, most people recommend ordering the breakfast pasta, so naturally my mind was set before I even arrived at the Sicilian influenced cafe. However, upon reviewing their menu it became apparent that they have a good selection of appetising dishes that appealed to me just as much, if not more than the pasta. Growing up in a traditional Sicilian family, eggplant was a staple in our household and as such, I’m a sucker for the purple veg. So there was no questioning it, I had to have the eggplant salad with almond hommus, chickpeas, pickled raisins, baked ricotta and pomegranate. Continue reading

A lucky strike of fate had us walking up Albion Street right on midday when we caught sight of Rose Milk Food Store. In we walked to this newly opened cafe with the plan to grab a coffee and run, but one glimpse of their menu had us pulling up a seat in their intimate dining area. Full of natural light, the minimalist space is all white with the only hint of colour coming from a striking Rose Milk neon light on the back wall. With the kids in tow, we were travelling with two large strollers and despite taking up a bit of space, our lovely hosts were very accommodating, moving a few things around to get us in and seated. Burger places are a dime a dozen these days and it can be hard to differentiate one from another. Each try to bring something different to the table, be it a quirky theme or a unique menu option to stand out from the crowd. Burger Kitchen located across the road from Moonee Ponds station, is no exception to the rule. Here it’s all about creating your own customised burger, then teaming it up with a side of their signature waffle fries. Pick everything from the type of bread (brioche or sourdough), meat (beef or chicken) and a variety of fillings from their extensive list, which includes a few fancier options like onion rings, mac n cheese and even a potato rosti.

The idea of a rifle club is a really foreign concept to me. Of course I know they exist and there are heaps of people that engage in gun related sports and hobbies, but it’s just not something I’ve ever been exposed to. So when I got an invitation to attend the launch of new restaurant Bang Bang at The Rifle Club, located in the historic Caulfield City Rifle Club building in Elsternwick, I have to admit I was quite intrigued. 10 minutes and a Google search later, intrigue had turned into excitement and anticipation for the newest venture from the Riverland Group (The Boatbuilder’s Yard, Pilgrim Bar and Wye River General Store) who are the masters of bringing unique historic buildings back to life. South Yarra Vic 3141
Bright, fresh and full of light, drawing its name from the street it sits on, Darling cafe has the same relaxed aura as a hip beach front cafe. Attracting a rather young crowd, the place is full of positive energy. Take a seat in their beautifully decorated U shaped dining area and listen to the happy chatter of locals which is only broken up by the sounds of blenders bringing colourful fruit smoothies to life. Timber tables are adorned with gold and marble condiment trays, as well as a small bunch of bright fresh flowers which add to the general relaxed ambience of the space.

When my sister asked me to go to Dribbles Burgers, my immediate response was, ‘what? Dribble as in a dribbling baby?’. My sister shook her head, and gave me that ‘God you’re an idiot’ face. ‘No’ she said, ‘Dribbling as in bouncing a basketball, it’s basketball themed’. Ahhhhhh, and the light bulb in my head turned on.
Your basketball journey starts as soon as you open the front door. Walk up to the counter decorated with locker doors and order your choice of burger, each named after a legend of the game. Jordan, Lebron and Shaq, all make an appearance on a relatively small menu that doesn’t waste time on fancy or pretentious burger fillings. It’s all about the classics – cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, chicken burger and a mushroom burger thrown in for good measure. As lovers of a good chicken burger, we opted for the Birdman with its southern crispy fried chicken breast, cheese, coleslaw and sauces. Although a bit heavy handed with the cracked pepper, the burger was juicy, crisp and full of flavour. Of the few burgers we ordered, this was definitely our favourite. Continue reading
