My past experiences with Indian cuisine started and ended with Butter Chicken and Naan, however my repertoire was recently updated post a visit to Dosa Hut. Specialising in South India street food like Dosa and Biryani, there is nothing flashy about Dosa Hut. It’s a paper cups and cutlery in the middle of the table kinda place, but don’t be fooled into believing that the lack of fancy trimmings, somehow represents a mediocre foodie experience. Quite the contrary actually. If anything this was some of the best Indian food I’d had in ages, which is a big call given Melbourne is now saturated with restaurants claiming to offer the best Indian cuisine.
The team here back their offering, they know it’s good and don’t bother wasting time with niceties. They let the food talk for itself and talk it does. Take one mouthful of the Samosa Chaat and you’ll know what I mean. Packed full of flavour, it’s complex, yet simple and oh so tasty. Tender chickpeas that melted away, soft samosa that absorbed all that beautiful gravey and a good dollop of yogurt to round it all out. This was my first time consuming a Chaat and I’m officially on the bandwagon. Next time I’ll take two thanks.
Another smashing dish was the Dahi Puri. These little puffs of pastry were filled with onion and potato, then topped with yogurt and three flavoursome chutneys. Each puff was a pleasure to eat and incredibly addictive. Once you pop, you definitely can’t stop. An entire serve was devoured in minutes and left us wanting more.
We were also nicely surprised by the crispy goat and the ginger chicken. Now, goat is not something we’d normally order, however it was highly recommended by the wait staff so we gave it a crack. The bite sized pieces were coated in a spice mix and deep fried. I’m not usually a fan of spicy food, and both packed a punch, however I still found them quite enjoyable to eat. The husband who is quite fond of hot food absolutely loved both dishes.
Sure, if you’re after a great Dosa or Biryani, Dosa Hut have got you covered but that goes without saying. What needs to be said is that the rest of their extensive menu is just as impressive. It offers a great variety of classic and contemporary dishes, all at bargain basement prices. You’re guaranteed to walk out really satisfied without hurting your hip pocket.
I dined as a guest of Dosa Hut, however all opinions expressed above are strictly my own.
