Food – Up In Smoke

28 Hopkin Street
Footscray Vic 3011

As soon as I hear anyone utter the words Up In Smoke, I’m taken back to my teens and immediately hear Dr Dre singing in my ear (if you’ve got no idea what the hell I’m on about, google Dr Dre Up In Smoke Tour) ‘hold up, heeeeey….’. Still to this day I know the words to just about every song, not bad for a tour that happened 17 years ago (now I’m showing my age!). So lets just say I was quite intrigued when I heard there was an American BBQ restaurant in Footscray going by the same name. Intrigue grew into excitement when I learned it’s brought to us by the legends behind 8Bit. Clearly mastering one type of American cuisine wasn’t enough, they had to have a crack at conquering BBQ too, and if packed tables every night of the week are anything to go by, conquer they have done. Food – BAWA

248 Burwood Road
Hawthorn Vic 3122

So if we’re being honest, we all know that cafes in Melbourne are a dime a dozen. Every suburb has a new eatery popping up claiming to be the best thing since sliced bread, but in reality there is very little that separates it from another cafe 1km down the road. That’s not to say they’re bad, quite the opposite, the food is almost always good, but there is very little to no point of difference. As someone who eats out a lot, I don’t want same old same old when we visit a new spot, I want to be wowed and try something a bit different. Well this week BAWA did exactly that.

Food – Penta

28 Riddell Parade
Elsternwick Vic 3185

So my brunch date this week saw me making the trip across town to the very popular Penta in Elsternwick (sister cafe to Tinker Northcote, read about it here). Lured by hundreds of beautiful photos posted across my social media feeds, this is one meal that I was looking forward to all week. Before we even arrived I knew exactly what I was going to order. After seeing hundreds of pictures of their now iconic Nutella Pannacotta that had me drooling at first glance, there was no way I was going all that way without sampling it for myself. Food – Tinker

235 High Street
Northcote Vic 3070

It’s not hard to miss Tinker when driving down High Street in Northcote, just look for the big group of people huddled around the door eagerly awaiting a table. Now I must admit, the very sight of all these people made me shudder. I loathe waiting for anything, let alone a table at a cafe in a town full of quality options. So as I approached my brunch dates (the lovely Olive Sundays and Happiness Is Food) and was told we’d be looking at an hour wait, a little something inside of me died. So in anticipation of a good feed we endured a 90 minute wait!

Food – Punch Lane

43 Little Bourke Street
Melbourne Vic 3001

Like a punch in the face, Punch Lane definitely leaves its mark on you, but this is one you’ll be happy to relive time and time again. Located in the theater district of Little Bourke Street, this highly regarded wine bar and restaurant is easily one of my top ten Melbourne dining experiences (it’s probably more like top five, but you get the gist). The dark and moody space oozes class and style, without any of the associated arrogance you often find in similar caliber establishments. Continue reading

Food – Naked in the Sky

285 Brunswick Street
Fitzroy Vic 3065

It’s ok, I promise Naked in the Sky isn’t the name of a seedy XXX bar and yes, all visitors are required to wear clothes, (although based on a recent visit, some do wear less than others). What it is, is a really impressive roof top bar, only accessible by one small lift located in the back of Naked for Satan’s Brunswick Street restaurant. It’s quite a funny sight when entering the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon to see most of the tables empty, but this huge queue of people waiting to catch the lift upstairs. Once you’re transported up a few levels and you enter the Spanish inspired bar with its million dollar views of the city, it’s easy to see why so many people are drawn here time and time again. Food – Wings of Glory

253 Clarendon Street
South Melbourne Vic 3205

It’s fair to say the Melbourne has something of a love affair with American food, be it burgers, tex mex or traditional southern BBQ. Inspired by a trip to the States, Steven Lo and Jennifer Vo decided it was time to add great quality American buffalo wings to that list and from this Wings of Glory was born. Located on busy Clarendon Street in South Melbourne, this relaxed eatery focuses on two things – wings and beer. Offering original wings, boneless wings and chicken wraps in a variety of seasons and marinades, plus a few delicious dipping sauces on the side.
