Le Bakehouse, the latest venture from pastry chef extraordinaire Neil McKenzie (the man behind The French Quarter and Parisian Baker) is something of step away from his previous bakeries. Still present are the exceptional pastries, cakes and donuts but gone is the traditional French fit out. A modern space in comparison to its predecessors, it really encapsulates current interior design trends. Clean lines, gold trim, marble tables and counter, pastel pink artwork and grey occasional chairs that I’d love to see in my own dining room. Continue reading →

Unlike the nursery rhyme for which this cafe is named, there is nothing destitute or impoverished about Brunswick’s Lucy Lockett. On the contrary, it has a warm community feel to it. To one side of us friendly wait staff work with a couple of locals to solve a crossword, on the other side my heart is warmed by a couple of men speaking their native Italian tongue and opposite us sat a lovely lady with her dog who kept my young son entertained while we ate. Nothing felt forced or fake, there was a genuine sense of community where everyone is welcome and warmly greeted as though they were an old friend.

Housed in an old warehouse on the Brunswick end of Lygon Street, what you find when entering the red door of East Elevation is in complete contrast to the concrete jungle outside. This large warehouse space has a really earthy feel to it and almost resembles a greenhouse just with an industrial twist. There are literally plants everywhere you look, be it in planter boxes, little pots, vases or hanging from the ceiling, which create a very calming environment to enjoy a meal. Continue reading →

If you’re anything like me, the very mention of tequila bring back a wave of bad memories, of nights spent downing slammers, ending with me being violently ill and nursing a serious hang over for the next two days. I’m shuddering at the very thought of it!

So when I was invited to a tequila master class at Mi Corazon Tequila Bar, I hesitated before accepting,  really what more could there be to learn about tequila other than to stay away from it. Well apparently there is a lot to learn as I found out during our super informative master class. Now I’m not the biggest drinker and felt that I’d be out of my league, so to ensure that I got the most out of this session, I went along with my ultimate wingman, the husband, who is impartial to a drink or two.

Located on Sydney Road, Maddox is an understated little café housed in one of the pretty old shopfronts that line this busy street. The leadlight front windows are in stark contrast to the exposed brick interior which is styled with recycled timber and industrial pendant lights. Walking past the timber counter, we took a seat in the charming backroom, which was a more refined space than the entrance, with a large restored timber staircase, open fire place and some really eye catching artwork furnishing the walls.
